Notes: Appendix 3, “Vocabulaires des peuples indigènes du Brésil dont il est fait mention dans cette relation de voyage” (v.3, p. 305-360), begins with general remarks on languages of Brazil and includes several vocabularies, the longest of which, “Vocabulaire botocoudy”, lists approximately 400 terms in Botocudo, accompanied by remarks on grammar and vocabulary in “De la langue des Botocoudys” (p. 3-338). Also included are: “Vocabulaire machacali” (p. 339-340), listing over 40 terms; “Vocabulaire patacho”, listing 2 dozen terms (p. 341-344); “Vocabulaire malali”, listing over 100 terms (p. 344-347); “Vocabulaire maconi”, listing over 100 terms (p. 348-351); and 2 Kamakán vocabularies, “Vocabulaire des Camacans civilisés de Belmonte, nommé Meniengs* par les Portugais” (p. 352-355) and “Vocabulaire des Camacans ou Mongoyos de la Capitainerie de Bahia” (p. 355-360), listing 90 and 150 terms respectively. All vocabularies list French terms alphabetically in left column with native equivalents in parallel column. Translation by J.B.B. Eyriès from German into French. *Sebeok describes Menien as a “Tapuya jargon with African elements, used in E. Brazil” (Native Languages of the Americas, NY: Plenum, 1977, v.2, p. 427).
