Notes: Chapter 61, “Alcune cose vedute nell’Isola, ed i costumi, le cerimonie, e la religione de gl’Indiani”, contains Fray Ramón Pané’s “Scrittura di Fra Roman delle antichità de gl’Indiani, la qual egli con diligenza come uomo che sa la lor lingua, hà raccolte per commandamento dell’ Ammiraglio” (p. 253-290), an account in 26 chapters of the Taino of Española (Spagnuola) at the time of the conquest, including legends and other ethnographic data, with numerous examples of indigenous vocabulary. (Text of chapters 22-26 printed out of sequence, with erroneous page and chapter numbering.) Fray Ramón was a Catalan who, according to Las Casas, accompanied Columbus on his Second Voyage in 1493.
Translated by Ulloa from the author’s now lost Spanish manuscript, which was never printed. This translation first published Venice, 1571.
