Notes: Ms. codex. Title supplied by cataloguer. Author attribution identified from Diego López Cogolludo's Historia de Yucatan, first printed in Madrid, 1688. This diccionario is excerpted from the author's Calepino, published in six volumes, of which he made two holographic sets; one was presented to the Duque de Infantado and the other to a Franciscan convent in Spain; both sets are now reportedly lost. Date of 1577 appears in volume 1, leaf [58] verso; publication date of ca. 1600 to 1630 supplied by JCB description of codex in Catalogue of manuscript codices. Caption title in volume 1, leaf [1] recto: A. ante a. et b. Caption title in volume 1, leaf [1] recto is in Latin; dictionary words are in the Mayan language and translated into Spanish. Caption title in volume 2, leaf [1] recto: Vocabulario en la lengua de maya. Caption title in volume 2, leaf [1] recto is in Spanish; dictionary words are in the Spanish language and translated into Mayan. Pagination: v. 1: [465] leaves; v. 2: [236] leaves. Volume 1 is composed in two small late 16th century hands, one in italic (leaves [1-76] and [254-465]) and the other in a miniscule hand (leaves [77-253]. Volume 2 is composed in a larger, apparently early 17th century italic hand, augmented or annotated in places in a later hand, a middle or late 17th century cursive. John Carter Brown Library copy volume 2 has a gathering of [6] leaves tipped in before caption title on leaf [1] recto "Vocabulario en la lengua de maya"; this gathering of [6] leaves does not belong to the "Vocabulario en la lengua de maya." John Carter Brown Library copy bound in early 19th century full mottled calf; volume 1 is rebacked in red morocco; housed in slip case which measures 19 cm. tall.
