HIV AND SYPHILIS ARE INCREASING AMONG MEN IN RHODE ISLAND

HIV/AIDS

HIV continues to affect gay and bisexual men in Rhode Island. Significant progress has been made in the treatment and management of the disease. HIV can now be treated with a single pill in many people. However, serious complications of the disease can still occur, especially when HIV is diagnosed late. Know your status, get tested at least once a year and more often if having multiple sexual partners.

SYPHILIS

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease that is causing many new infections in Rhode Island among gay and bisexual men. Unlike HIV, Syphilis can be easily transmitted by unprotected oral sex. If untreated, syphilis can lead to severe neurovascular symptoms including death. A simple blood test can detect syphilis. Syphilis can be cured with penicillin. Know your status, get tested at least once a year and more often if having multiple sexual partners.

The Miriam Hospital Immunology Center is now offering HIV and Syphilis testing.
