Application Process

Applying to the PhD Program

Thank you for your interest in our PhD program. If you haven't already, we suggest you first acquaint yourself with our PhD program to determine that it's appropriate for your needs.

Please read our FAQ. It answers many of the questions you probably have.

Application Requirements

We expect strong results from our applicants in the following:

  • GRE General Exam
  • Records of grades or other academic performance
  • Letters of reference
  • TOEFL or IELTS (for applicants whose native language is not English)

Again we urge you to read our FAQ.

Applying

The strict deadline for the receipt of complete applications (including test scores and letters of recommendation) for entry in September is January 3. (We do not accept PhD applications to start at other times of the year.)

You can complete the entire application on-line and we prefer you use this medium. If, however, you cannot apply on-line, you can request a paper application form.

You can get additional information from our FAQ and from the Graduate School's Website.

Graduate applications to Brown are handled by a combination of the CCMB, the participating departments, and the Graduate School.  Your application is formally processed by the Graduate School.  It is then read by a committee of the CCMB and forwarded to the appropriate academic unit (Division of Applied Mathematics, Department of Computer Science, or Division of Biology) for its evaluation.  The final recommendations will be forwarded to the Graduate School.  The Graduate School formally admits you to the program.  Therefore, you may receive correspondence from any of these entities.
