Policies for Office Hours

  • Please check the designation (PhD student, undergraduate - PhD track advising, etc.) of the appointment slot and make sure that it applies to you before signing up.
  • Within the appropriate group, please sign up for the earliest available appointment slot that you can attend.
  • Please check the calendar before you come to the office, in case there have been any changes. If no one is signed up for a given appointment group as of the morning of the meeting, I may remove it from the calendar.
  • If the allotted time slot ends up being too short for what we need to discuss, please follow up with me by e-mail immediately after our meeting so we can arrange a time to continue the conversation.

PhD student

  • Please send a written summary of what you'd like to discuss at least 36 hours before our meeting.
  • After the meeting, please send a written summary of the main takeaways and what next steps you plan.

Undergraduate - PhD track advising

  • Please review this page and these notes.
  • Please complete this form. I will sometimes use responses to e-mail you information that may be relevant to your pursuit of a PhD.
  • Please send a written summary of what you'd like to discuss at least 36 hours before our meeting.
  • I also recommend sending me a current CV and unofficial transcript, if you are comfortable doing so.

Undergraduate - concentration advising

  • Please review this page for information on concentration requirements.
  • If you are submitting a new or revised declaration, please make sure to complete both the Course Plan and the Program Plan. Please make sure that your declaration meets all of the department's requirements before we meet. I cannot approve a new declaration until we have met in person.
  • If you have any questions about the department's requirements or policies, please contact the Academic Programs Manager.

Undergraduate - student in a regular course

  • Please send a written summary of what you'd like to discuss at least 36 hours before our meeting.
  • If you have not signed up or have not sent a written summary, you are still welcome to come to office hours. I will give priority to those who have signed up in advance.

Walk me home hours (undergraduate or PhD)

  • These are sporadic opportunities for an unstructured conversation, outdoors, masked, and socially distanced.
  • These are subject to last-minute cancellation. If you have something specific you'd like to discuss, it would be better to sign up for a slot in the appropriate office hour.
  • We leave from the picnic tables outside 70 Waterman. If I'm not there within 5 minutes, feel free to call my office phone. If I don't answer, you can assume the walk is canceled.
  • If no one has signed up as of the morning of the walk, I will cancel the walk.

Calendar and Appointment Slots

  • Please see the displays below for the calendar and appointment slots.
  • If you aren't able to see the displays, please try these links: calendar, appointment slots.
  • Using these resources may require signing up for a Google calendar account.
  • If you are experiencing technical issues that you can't resolve on your own, you can write to Tim McCrohan for help.
