The Science Library located at the corner of Thayer and Waterman Streets is visible from all around the East Side of Providence and is one of the more distinctive buildings on Brown's campus.  Known for its concrete façade and being host to large scale Tetris, few know that the building really 3" shorter than originally intended.

The original engineering plans for the Sciences Library didn't take into account the weight of the books in the building, and when the building was completed and loaded in 1971, its foundation settled and the overall height of the building was reduced.  The height reduction changed its status from 12th highest building in Providence, to 13th highest, tied with One Citizens Plaza.

The Corporation recently approved a captial plan to lower the surrounding ground and effectively raise the Sci Li 3" to meet with the original design specifications, and reclaim its place as 12th highest building in the city.  The project, estimated to take 9 weeks during the summer, is to be included in the resurfacing of the area surrounding the library.

Sciences Park will be rehabilitated to better connect to the School of Engineering's Prince Lab building.  As this requires some excavation, repairs to the Sci Li becomes a simpler task.
