Frequently Asked Questions for Navigating Your Career

frequently asked questions

I want to transfer to another position at Brown – where do I start?

The best place to start is by building your Professional Profile in Workday. The Professional Profile is an essential first step internal applicants must take in order to apply for another position at Brown. Once your Professional Profile is complete you can refer to the “Applying for an Internal Position” job aid in Workday Learning.

Is the Professional Profile enough to apply for an internal position, or should I attach a cover letter and resume as well?

As a best practice, please attach both a cover letter and resume in order to provide the hiring manager more details about your accomplishments.  Both the cover letter and resume should include the qualifications for the position and the reason you are applying.

Am I able to check the status of my application?

Yes, you can run the “My Applications” report in Workday to check the status, “Under Review” means you are still being considered.  You may also review the Career worklet on the Workday home landing page in order to view the status of your application.

I’m currently in a Grade 8 position, am I able to apply for Grade 9 or Grade 10 positions?

Absolutely! As long as you meet the minimum qualifications for the position you will be considered regardless of your current Grade.

Can I withdraw my application?

Yes, you can. To do so type "Withdraw Application" into the search bar and select the applications you would like to withdraw from consideration.

I was invited for an interview, what is the best way to prepare?

Request a copy of the full job description so you can become more familiar with what the position entails, research the department you are interviewing with and enhance your interviewing skills by taking the Interview Techniques and Resume Writing training in Workday Learning.

Will I be required to submit reference contact information from my current manager?

Yes, if you are selected as a finalist, your current manager will be contacted for a reference as part of the internal hiring process.

If I wasn’t selected for the position, now what?

Ask the hiring manager for constructive feedback. Knowing why you were not selected will help determine which professional development opportunities you should take next.  Reviewing the individual development plan and seeking out new opportunities to learn and grow will help you to prepare for the next opportunity.

If offered the position, will there be a probationary period?

Yes, a new three month probationary period is required for all transfers to new jobs.
