Staff Development Program (SDP) provides a variety of professional development opportunities for Brown University staff.
Do you feel that you get your point across clearly and effectively? Asserting yourself is the key to effectively communicating your facts, opinions, thoughts and needs. To do so, one must develop a full repertoire of assertive speaking strategies. This session will begin with a discussion of the benefits of the assertive communication style and then focus on a 3-step process for creating and delivering an assertive message. Participants will also learn how to effectively give and receive constructive feedback. The workshop will be filled with numerous opportunities for participants to employ and practice these assertive speaking techniques.
In this workshop, you will learn about the five levels of listening, assess your current listening skills, and employ strategies necessary to become an active/empathic listener. The workshop also touches on the basics of body language. In all, you will discover how to handle both individual and group communication challenges and leave with an action plan for continued communication skills improvement!
One of the most important person-to-person communication skills is the ability to give and receive feedback effectively. This highly interactive workshop will provide participants with the tools needed to effectively give and receive feedback in a variety of situations. Having practiced these techniques in a variety of "real issue" situations, participants will leave this session with clarity and confidence to handle future interactions.
Please note, this session is intended for individuals not currently managing others. For leaders who currently manage others, Learning and Development offers the Advanced Emotional Intelligence session as part of the Leadership Certification Program (LCP).
There is a $125 materials fee charged to the participant's department for this session.
Emotional intelligence is the something in each of us that is a bit intangible. It affects how we manage behavior, navigate social complexities, and make personal decisions to achieve positive results. Emotional intelligence is comprised of four core skills paired under two primary competencies: personal and social.
Prior to the session, participants will take a self-appraisal that delivers scores for the key components of emotional intelligence:
- Overall Emotional Quotient (EQ)
- Social awareness
