Mandatory Health Insurance for J Exchange Visitors
All J-1 and J-2 dependents are required to have health insurance for the entire length of time they are in J- status. Exchange visitors in J-1 and J-2 status who do not maintain adequate health insurance are considered in violation and can be subject to termination of their J status.
If a J-1 scholar is not eligible for Brown University health insurance they will need to purchase a plan that meets the minimum requirements for J Exchange Visitors. Brown University offers a plan through Gallagher (Inbound) that exceeds the minimum requirements for J Exchange Visitors.
If a J-1 scholar will be coming to Brown University as a (VRF) Visiting Research Fellow through the Graduate School, or as a Student Intern, they will be required to obtain the Gallagher (Inbound) insurance prior to the issuance of the DS-2019 certificate for J-1 visa eligibility.
J-1 Scholars who will not be appointed as a (VRF) through the Graduate School, or as a Student Intern, are not restricted to the Gallagher (Inbound) insurance, and can obtain any health insurance provided that it meets the minimum acceptable coverage indicated on the J-1 Health Insurance Memo, and can provide evidence of their insurance after arrival to Brown University.
J-2 Dependents can select any health insurance provided that it meets the minimum acceptable coverage indicated on the J-1 Health Insurance Memo.
