The J-1 student immigration status is used for individuals who are pursuing an academic objective (usually a degree program or non-degree exchange program) in the U.S. Students are eligible for this category only if they are supported substantially by funding from any source other than personal or family funds (e.g. government or university funding), or participating in a approved exchange program between Brown University and non-U.S. academic or research institution.
Please note if you will be applying for or are currently in the U.S. with a J-1 visa sponsored by an institution (i.e. IIE, VRF, LASPAU, etc.) other than Brown, please contact that institution for further information regarding your immigration status and responsibilities.
