Common Issues Brought to an Ombuds

In general you might bring any issue about which you think something should be done—but you are not sure where to go or what to do. You can have a confidential, informal conversation with an impartial, independent person about issues - big or small.  (See What Do We Do?)

Common issues include:

  • Working with an advisor, supervisor, someone you manage, a colleage, a team or a group
  • Dealing with a conflict that is keeping you from doing your job well
  • Navigating your way through bureaucracy
  • Raising concerns about misconduct - academic, financial or research
  • Finding next steps when communication has broken down
  • Compensation, benefits
  • Ethics issues and Brown University values, any kind of misconduct
  • Fear of coming forward or of acting to stop unacceptable behavior
