Dear Members of the Brown Community,

I am writing to inform you of recent changes to staffing in the Title IX Office. Amanda Walsh has stepped down from her position as Title IX Program Officer as of January 17, 2017. Amanda has started a new position that will allow her to pursue new opportunities in the legal arena. She will be missed here at Brown, but I am grateful for all that Amanda has done to ensure that Brown is fully responsive to addressing Title IX matters.

Amanda came to Brown in May 2015 and has been a leader in coordinating education and training on issues of sexual assault and gender-based harassment and discrimination and in overseeing the resolution of alleged violations of Brown’s policies related to Title IX. She was instrumental in implementing the changes in Brown’s policies and practices which were recommended by the Task Force on Sexual Assault that year.

During this transition, Liza Cariaga-Lo, Vice President for Academic Development, Diversity and Inclusion, will serve as the University’s Interim Title IX Program Officer. In addition, Marc Peters, Health Educator at University Health Services, will serve as the Interim Deputy Title IX Coordinator for Undergraduate Students. To further ensure adequate support and expertise during the transition period, we have engaged Claire K. Hall, J.D., an outside consultant, to assist the Title IX Office as it continues to provide thorough, prompt and equitable resolution of complaints. Claire is the Principal of UECAT, LLC, where her work focuses on providing higher education compliance, training, investigation and consulting services for colleges and universities across the country. Claire also works with schools to help create Title IX grievance processes that are fair, balanced and in line with evolving trauma-informed practices. She has previously conducted external investigations on behalf of Brown and is well-versed in our policies and procedures. Russell Carey, Executive Vice President for Policy and Planning and former co-chair of the Sexual Assault Task Force which developed the University policy, will provide oversight in this area during the transition and will also lead an immediate search for the Title IX Program Officer position.

I am grateful to Amanda for the excellent work she has done in developing and leading the Title IX Office in its formative years and establishing a solid foundation on which her successor can continue to build. Please join me in thanking Amanda for her leadership and many accomplishments while at Brown.

Sincerely,

Christina Paxson
