On May 31, our dear friend and colleague Hans Peter Edwardsen passed away unexpectedly. He was just 52 years old and was a single father to his 14-year-old daughter, Pella - the love of his life.
Hans came to Brown in 2010 as the Department of Public Safety’s first Director for IT/Systems and Technology. Prior to this, he served as IT Director for the Major League Soccer Camps and as a Lead Network Technician at Foxwoods Resort Casino. He was a graduate of the University of Rhode Island.
Hans was solely responsible for launching many of the department’s security technology initiatives and for managing the rapid expansion of these technologies. These initiatives greatly enhanced the overall security of the Brown campus. Hans always came to work willing to tackle any project and was extremely helpful in improving the Department’s police innovation approach. He had great enthusiasm for his work and absolutely loved working at Brown.
We will miss his great laugh and his funny stories. He made an effort every day to walk around the building, checking in with his colleagues to say “hello” or “good morning” to everyone. While he was an exemplary colleague, staff in DPS will remember Hans most for his great love for and devotion to his family -- his mother Helene, his sister Anita, and especially his daughter Pella. He loved to travel and particularly enjoyed his yearly trips to Norway and to Disney World with his family.
We are raising money to help with funeral costs and to provide some financial support for his daughter. We have all been deeply affected by this sudden loss and will do whatever we can to help his family. Any donations are greatly appreciated.
The Edwardsen gofundme page is being sponsored by the Brown University Department of Public Safety to benefit his family. Thank you in advance for your support.
Our thoughts and prayers will remain with his family and Pella.
