Frank Garcia-Ornelas will join the Brown Center for Students of Color as Assistant Director

Dear Colleagues,

It is my great pleasure to announce that Frank Garcia-Ornelas will join the Brown Center for Students of Color as Assistant Director of the BCSC. In conversations with students and staff, Frank showed his tireless commitment to advocating for the needs of students of color. In his cover letter, Frank wrote, "My life’s passion is to be an agent of change, an advocate and most importantly a mentor to underrepresented students at institutions of higher education." His authentic personality creates a welcoming atmosphere, where he can share his passion for supporting and mentoring students who hold marginalized identities.  His can-do attitude and collaborative approach make him a huge asset for the BCSC.

Frank comes to Brown from the University of Missouri-Kansas City as the Bloch School Senior Student Recruitment Specialist, where he advised and mentored students from student organizations like Men of Color, Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, and Association of Latino Professionals for America. He also guided students through their academic journeys, from course registration to academic appeals. His work also extended to recruitment and retention, with a special focus on first generation and low-income college students. Prior to this role, Frank was the Associate Director at the University of Pennsylvania Greenfield Intercultural Center where he developed, implemented, and evaluated the center's programs and priorities.  While at Penn, Frank provided leadership and mentorship to student organizations such as United Minorities Council, Natives at Penn, and Assembly of International Students, to name a few. He supervised the center staff and assisted in the development of assessment tools and learning outcomes.

Frank comes to Brown with over 10 years of experience in key administrative and leadership roles that are student-focused and social justice oriented. Frank holds a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Missouri, Kansas City and a master of social work from Boston College. Frank will be joining our dedicated and passionate staff at the BCSC including our wonderful student staff. I'm grateful to their commitment to the BCSC mission and for their wise counsel in helping me select Frank to join the team.

Frank's first day is March 8th. Please join me in welcoming him to Brown and the Campus Life family!

Best wishes,
