I hope you and your families are healthy and well. I am most pleased to announce the appointment of Dana Hamdan as senior director for strategic engagement and chief of staff.
Dana comes to Brown from Oberlin College and Conservatory, where she serves as Associate Dean of Students and Executive Director of the Career Development Center. At Oberlin, she develops and manages career programming and outreach initiatives, leads efforts on student advising, leadership, engagement, and support, and oversees the Center for Innovation & Impact, the International Student Resource Center, and the Student Help and Resource Exchange (akin to Student Support Services at Brown). She has collaborated closely with the Office of the Dean of Arts & Sciences, the Office of Advancement (including parent and family giving), the Office of Finance & Administration, and the Board of Trustees.
Dana has created a number of Oberlin’s signature programs that connect the academic and co-curricular experience of students. These include the Career Communities initiative, which allows students to connect with alumni, parents, and peers who share their passions, and to launch meaningful careers after graduation. This fall, Dana developed a four-month career immersion program for juniors during their fall semester away from campus as part of Oberlin’s Covid-19 response. The program consisted of a month-long career readiness and skill-building summit followed by a funded remote internship with an Oberlin graduate. Well over half of the junior class participated in the program, which included workshops to critically examine how career paths can be influenced by a person’s identity and social positionality. Dana described the program, with a particular focus on its DEI components, in an essay in Inside Higher Ed.
In her new role as a member of the senior leadership team and advisor to the Vice President for Campus Life, Dana assumes a range of responsibilities related to institutional and divisional priorities. She will be responsible for leading strategic visioning and planning efforts related to the Division of Campus Life. These will include coordinating and aligning division-wide operations and resources related to the student experience, leading the visioning, building, and implementing of a robust range of targeted professional growth opportunities for division staff at all levels and stages of career, leading and coordinating the expansion of division and department level assessment efforts especially related to division- and department-level strategic indicators measuring outcomes and progress.
Dana will also oversee three important growth areas for the division: diversity, equity and inclusion efforts; division communications; and parent and family engagement. Supervising new directors in each of these areas, she will provide vision and leadership in developing priorities for future growth, working with key internal and external partners. Dana’s support of these areas will benefit the overall operation of the entire division.
Dana holds a BA from Guilford College, where she majored in political science, and an MEd from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She speaks Arabic and English fluently.
Dana will join the division on June 1st. Please join me in welcoming her to the Division of Campus Life and to Brown.
