Sean Thompson joined us on Monday, March 30 as the inaugural Program Director for Orientation and First Year Experience. Previously Sean served as the Director of New Student and Family Programs at University of Massachusetts Boston where he lead an orientation program for 2,400 new students and supervised a Program Assistant, Graduate Intern, and 27 orientation staff members.
Prior to his appointment at UMass Boston, Sean served as the Assistant Director of New Student Programs at URI and Assistant Director of Student Programs and Leadership at Roger Williams University. From these experiences and connections to Rhode Island, Sean has developed a breadth and depth of knowledge and experience advancing the needs of new students with an emphasis on supporting first generation, historically under-represented, and low income students. Sean earned a BS in Economics from the University of Hartford and an MS in Counseling: Student Development/Higher Education from Central Connecticut State University.
Sean impressed us with his record of developing a vision, building relationships with stakeholders, bridging efforts across units, and leading change. Sean believes in the importance of universities’ being "student ready" instead of relying on incoming students to be "college ready.” Sean will be reporting to Koren Bakkegard, and his office will be on the third floor of 20 Benevolent.
