Athletics & Recreation

Varsity Athletics

A member of the Ivy League, Brown sponsors 37 intercollegiate sports that compete in NCAA Division I, the highest level of collegiate competition. Actively-enrolled Brown students may attend any regular-season competition free of charge by presenting their Brown ID; post-season competition and championships may require paid tickets. Check out the schedule of games and competitions, and come out to support friends and fellow students!

Brown’s varsity sports include baseball, basketball, crew, cross country, equestrian, fencing, football, field hockey, gymnastics, golf, ice hockey, lacrosse, skiing, soccer, softball, squash, swimming and diving, tennis, track & field, volleyball, water polo, and wrestling. Brown teams and individuals are among the finest in the nation, frequently winning team and individual awards for athletic and academic accomplishments, and competing in post-season play.

Intramural and Club Sports

Brown’s Intramural Sports Program offers structured athletic opportunities in a variety of team, dual, individual, and special-event programs. All Brown University and RISD students, faculty, and staff may participate in the intramural program. Form an intramural team with your departmental group or residence hall mates. Examples include flag football, soccer, basketball, badminton, and inner tube water polo.

Brown’s Club Sport teams offer students a higher level of competition than on-campus intramurals provide, without the rigorous time constraints required of varsity sport student athletes. The Club Sports program comprises both well-established, highly competitive clubs and a second group of sports either in their nascent stages or for which the University offers a varsity program. Most Club Sport teams compete extensively in extramural competition, and many hold memberships in athletic conferences. Club sports at Brown are student organizations sustained through the leadership and interest of students with the assistance of the Department of Athletics and Physical Education.

Fitness & Recreation

Group fitness, personal training, and instructional classes are sponsored through the Physical Education & Recreational Sports department of Brown Athletics. Participate in cardio kick, yoga, or  zumba. Take a tai chi or squash class. Learn to skate or learn to swim.

In addition to the Nelson Fitness and Coleman Aquatics Center, and the OMAC,  the three satellite fitness centers in the residence halls are available to actively-enrolled students with their Brown ID card.
