First week of MayIn an effort to continue the success and momentum of the “125 Years of Women at Brown” Conference last year, Brown Women’s Week will take place annually during the first week of May. This year we will be virtual and alumnae are encouraged to make a plan to get together and celebrate Brown. Your photos and stories will be shared on the WLC’s official social media pages, as well as the University’s. Using the hashtag #BrownWomenTogether, show your commitment to life after Brown and showcase the connections you have made through your shared University experience. April 6 (New York, NY): WLC members Meredith Berkman '86 and Amy Reiss '85 hosted a service-based event in which alumnae and friends knitted baby hats for the 125 Years of Women at Brown Conference Service Project. The event featured guest speaker and founder of Saving Mothers, WLC member Dr. Tara Shirazian '99 MD'03.

March 23 (Irvine, CA): WLC member Andra Greene Ellingson '78 hosted a 125 Years of Women at Brown Pre-Conference event with local alumnae.

March 12 (Scottsdale, AZ): Friend of the WLC Kathe Anderson '72 hosted a 125 Years of Women at Brown Pre-Conference event with local alumnae to discuss the Conference, memories of Brown, and life since Brown. 

March 2 (Chicago, IL): WLC member Sara Dioguardi '83, P'20 invited Chicago-based alumnae to her office to celebrate 125 Years of Women at Brown. The program featured trivia about women's history at Brown and a photo presentation of Brown women through the years.

February 23 (New York NY): Friend of the WLC Irene Buchman '67 hosted local alumnae to raise awareness and excitement for the 125 Years of Women at Brown Conference. Kate Ascher '80, professor of Urban Development at Columbia, presented and led a discussion "From the Best to the Worst: What is Holding Up Solutions to NYC's Infrastructure Problems." 

February 19 (Brooklyn, NY)
: Friend of the WLC Lynne Sachs '83 hosted her friends and local alumnae to her home to inspire interest and attendance for the 125 Years of Women at Brown Conference. There was also an active discussion about the significance of education centers in the new presidential administration.

February 8 (New York, NY): Executive Director of The Gray Foundation and WLC member Dana Zucker '90, P'21 with friend and co-host Sharon Fay '82, Head and Chief Investment Officer at Alliance Bernstein, hosted 87 local young alumnae for a Winter Gathering of Brown Women in New York and for a preview of the 125 Years of Women at Brown Conference.

January 31 (Washington, DC): WLC members Swathi Bojedla '07Shelley Fidler '68, P'09, and Aleta Margolis '89, P'20 with friends Parinaz Ziai Bahadori '86 and Gabriela Duran '06 hosted alumnae in the Washington, DC area to a reception and conversation about Brown Women in Government featuring DC Councilmember Elissa Silverman '95 and former Associate White House Counsel for President Obama Karen Dunn '97.

January 10 (Wellesley, MA)Marcia Walley Blenko '83 and Pamela Farrell Lenehan '74 AM'74, P'03, P'06 hosted 40 alumnae from the Boston suburbs for a special presentation of "Big Food, Small Food: How Entrepreneurs Are Changing the World's Oldest Industry," featuring guest speaker Marcia J. Hooper '77, P'09, P'11. Ms. Hooper has spent a career in private equity and now has turned her passion for food into her second chapter as an angel investor and advisor to food start-ups.

October 23 (Providence, RI): The Women's Launch Pad officially began with its first event of the year. Mentors from across the country came to meet the Mentees of the class of 2015. The Kick-Off Event began with a training session lead by Emilie Aries '09, the founder and CEO of Bossed Up.

October 6 (Washington, DC)Shelley Fidler '68, P'09Stacy Palmer '82, and Aleta Margolis '89 hosted Pam Constable '74 and Mara Liasson '77  in Washington, DC.  The event was a special evening to celebrate Brown's 250th anniversary. Pam Constable and Mara Liasson are both contributors to The Brown Reader: 50 Writers Remember College Hill, a collection of essays, comics, and poems by 50 alumni writers, poets, and artists reflecting on their time on College Hill.

August 4 (Boston, MA): Women's Launch Pad mentor Sharon Curhan, M. D. '83, P'10 hosted the initial meeting for a pilot program in the Boston area. The goal of the program is to connect young alumnae women with other alumnae women in the area. This program hopes to provide a space for young alumnae to ask questions about the obstacles they face in the transition from Brown to the real world.

August 1 (Bristol, RI): WLC Member Pam Lenehan '74, P'03, P'06 hosted an evening reception and conversation with Ira Magaziner '69, P'06, P'07, P'10. Ira discussed Brown's open curriculum and how it has impacted higher education.

Guest Speaker Kate Cook '98 discussed the importance of women working together and supporting each other in the workforce.

The event was open to all current and past mentees and mentors to meet other Brown graduates and students of the mentoring program living and/or working in the New York Metro area.

December 12 (New York City): The Women's Leadership Council hosted an evening with director and producer Donna Zaccaro '83 for a film screening of Geraldine Ferraro — Paving the Way at The New York Institute of Technology, Auditorium on Broadway. Zaccaro created a moving, powerful, and surprising portrait of her mother. The documentary tells the life of political trailblazer Geraldine Ferraro who changed the face of American politics.

August 6 (New York City)Lisa Vertucci '82, Executive Coach, presented a talk on Strategies for Future Success — Managing Your Summer Internship to an audience of students and recent graduates from a range of internship experiences (the news room of NBC Universal to IBM's Treasury office to a start-up specializing in health care data). Lisa led a terrific conversation about "creating one's brand" and "networking" and led exercises to reinforce valuable lessons on effective communication.

June 24, 6PM (New York City): Council Members Chandra Metzler '95 and Dana Zucker '90 along with fellow alumnae Bernadette Aulestia '94, Sue Ding '10Jacqui Hogans '03, and Barbara Weinreich '80 hosted more than 100 members of the Brown community at the HBO Theater to watch segments from the groundbreaking documentary MAKERS — Women Who Make America. The documentary, produced by Betsy West '73, features one of the largest and most dynamic collections of women's stories ever assembled, including Brown's 18th President, Ruth Simmons ADE'02. LHD'12 hon., Social Entrepreneur Nancy Lubin '93, and Human Rights Advocate Malika Saada Saar '92.

June 7 (Pacific Palisades, CA): Women's Leadership Council members Donna McGraw Weiss '89 and Lauren Corrao '83, P'16 hosted a special event for Brown alumnae and their daughters with Senior Lecturer in the Department of Theatre Arts and Performance Studies Barbara Tannenbaum P'10.

May 25 (Providence, RI): Council member Lauren Corrao '83, P'16 moderated a panel of Brown alumnae who work in the field of comedy for "A Sense of Humor — Brown Women in Comedy," a Commencement Forum sponsored by the Pembroke Center Associates and the Women's Leadership Council. From screenwriting to stand-up, women have been closing the gender gap in comedy. Laughs were shared with panelists Marin Hinkle '88, Stage, Television and Film actor; Tara Schuster '08, Writer, Performer, and Producer at Comedy Central; and Suzanne Whang SCM'86, Television Host, Actor, Writer, and Stand-Up Comedian, as they discussed their experiences in the comedy business.

April 4 (Washington, DC): The Women's Leadership Council and the Pembroke Center Associates presented "Brown Women in Foreign Policy", hosted by Women's Leadership Council Co-Chair Shelley N. Fidler '68, P'09, in collaboration with Nancy L. Buc '65 LLD'94 hon. and Melanie Y. Nakagawa '02. The panel discussion featured — Heather Hurlburt '89, Mariah Sixkiller '99, and Meghan Stewart '00.

April 4 (New York City): Women's Leadership Council member Marcia Dunn, MD '82 hosted a special cocktail reception with Brown University President Christina Paxson. 

April 3 (Providence, RI): The Pembroke Center presented the Liz Munves Sherman '77, P'06, P'09 Lecture in Gender and Sexuality Studies sponsored by Women's Leadership Council member and Pembroke Center Associates Council member Liz Sherman '77, P'06, P'09.  The first of an annual lecture series was presented by Professor Karen Newman. Professor Newman, the Owen Walker Professor of Humanities and Professor of Comparative Literature, discussed "Is there a future in the past," Eventails de Bosse, early modern engraving and the Judgment of Paris.

March 27 (Washington, DC): Women's Leadership Council Co-Chair Shelley N. Fidler '68, P'09, in collaboration with Caitie Whelan '07 and Mariah Sieber Sixkiller '99, welcomed young alumnae from the DC area to a cocktail reception to discuss "Fresh Ideas about Work-Life Balance."

March 21 (San Francisco, CA): The Women's Leadership Council and the Pembroke Center Associates presented "Brown Women and the field of Technology," hosted by Women's Leadership Council member Mary Vascellaro '74, P'07. The panel discussion featured Brynna Donn '91, Director Corporate Applications, Portals and Collaboration; Jill A. Huchital '89, Head of Engineering, InVisioneer; Nancy E. Pfund P'14, Managing Partner, DBL Investors; and was moderated by Jessica Lessin, News Editor and Senior Technology Reporter, The Wall Street Journal.

March 14 (Chicago, IL): Women's Leadership Council members Donna Erickson Williamson '74 and Nancy Gidwitz '70 brought the celebration of 120 Years of Women at Brown to Chicago when they hosted an event for "Brown Women through the Decades." Alumnae from a variety of class years joined together to share their thoughts and perspectives on Brown and Pembroke, and compare stories from their days as undergraduates.

March 13 (Providence, RI): The Women's Leadership Council, in association with the Pembroke Center Associates, the Sarah Doyle Women's Center, the Brown Alumni Association, and the Brown Club of Rhode Island, celebrated Women's History Month with a special event featuring the groundbreaking documentary MAKERS —  Women Who Make America. Highlights from the documentary were shown, followed by a panel discussion with the following women involved in the MAKERS project.

January 2013

January 17 (Naples, FL): Council member Judith Hushon '67, P'93 hosted a reception and screening of MAKERS — Women Who Make America. This documentary, produced by alumna Betsy West '73, features the largest and most dynamic collection of women's stories ever assembled including the story of Brown's 18th President Ruth J. Simmons.

January 15 (Boston, MA): Council member Sandee Ting Simshauser '84 hosted the first Boston Women's Launch Pad Winter Gathering. The event was open to all current and past mentees and mentors to meet other Brown graduates and students of the mentoring program living and/or working in the Boston metro area. 

January 10 (New York, NY): Council member Sue Buffum '74 hosted the fourth New York Women's Launch Pad Winter Gathering. The event was open to all current and past mentees and mentors to meet other Brown graduates and students of the mentoring program living and/or working in the New York metro area.

December 13 (Brooklyn Heights, NY): The Pembroke Center Associates presented "Youth and Privacy in the Age of Social Media" with special guest Danah Boyd '00 hosted by Victoria Westhead '83, Nicole Israel '00, and Leslie Newman '75, P '08, P '12. 

November 13 (Providence, RI): Council member Judith Danforth '77, P'06 and her husband Murray '77, P'06, continued their 10+ year tradition of hosting a dinner in their home for a few Brown students. This year's gathering included three children of current Council members and three Women's Launch Pad mentees.

November 13 (Chicago, IL): In partnership with Women's Leadership Council member and Brown Chicago Women's Network co-founder Donna C.E. Williamson '74, alumna Anne Loucks '87 hosted an event at her gallery for Chicago-area alumnae featuring Katherine Bergeron ADE'05, Dean of the College, who spoke about 'Women, Leadership, and the Future of Brown.'

November 8 (New York City): On behalf of the Women's Leadership Council (WLC) and Women's Launch Pad, Council member Marcia Dunn '82 and Women's Launch Pad mentor Vicky Oliver '82 provided an opportunity for a number of former Women's Launch Pad mentees in the New York metro area to attend Professor Barbara Tannebaum's P'10 sold out presentation 'Secrets of Persuasive Communication,' sponsored by the Brown Club of New York.

October 19 (Providence, RI): Members of the Women's Leadership Council gathered on College Hill for their fall meeting to celebrate the Council's past success and discuss plans for future initiatives. The Council was joined by President Paxson during lunch where she shared her vision for Brown and some of the University's key priorities.

October 18 (Providence, RI): Nearly 200 alumnae and students attended the Women's Launch Pad Kickoff, which featured a training offered by Karen Hoffman '83, P'13, Principal of DKS Consulting Group, and her partners Sharon O'Connor and Dale Sokoloff, entitled Practical Tips for a Successful Mentoring Relationship. The training was followed by dinner where attendees heard from President Paxson and alumna Morra Aarons-Mele '98, founder of the digital marketing agency Women Online, and its online marketing network The Mission List, who spoke about the importance of 'Composing the Life You Want.'

April 18 (Naples, FL): The Women's Leadership Council and the Brown University Club of Southwest Florida sponsored "A Birthday Lunch" celebrating 120 years of women at Brown hosted by Council Member Judy Hushon Ph.D.'67, P'93. Brown Alumnae ranging from 1948-1995 attended and reminisced about their time on College Hill. Although they were unable to return to campus for the Women's Leadership Conference in May, they were thrilled to be able to take part in the celebrations on a local level!

February 7 (New York, NY): Graduates of the Last Decade $1 Million Challenge Party. The Brown Annual Fund invited the classes of 2002 to 2011 to a cocktail reception with members of the Women's Leadership Council, sponsors of the $1 million GOLD challenge.

January 30 (Boston, MA): Dinner celebrating 120 Years of Women at Brown featuring a performance by the Chattertocks with special guests Jody Adams '80 (Chef and Owner of Rialto) and Liz Hayes '01 (Actor and Chattertocks Alumna). April 27 (Washington, DC): Nancy L. Buc '65, LLD'94, hon., Shelley N. Fidler '68, P'09, and Claudia Schechter '66 hosted an evening for engaging conversation with Brown faculty and alumnae/i, including Kay B. Warren, the Charles C. Tillinghast Jr. '32 Professor of International Studies and Professor of Anthropology and Director of the Pembroke Center, David Waskow '88, Program Director for Oxfam America, and moderator Jasmine Waddell '99, Visiting Lecturer of Sustainable International Development at Brandeis University's Heller School for Social Policy and Management, about international development; Co-sponsored by the Women's Leadership Council.

March 3 (San Francisco, CA): Women's Leadership Council Executive Committee Member, Mary Vascellaro '74, P'07 hosted 50 women from the San Francisco area to hear a panel on Women and Technology. Theresia Ranzetta '90 was masterful at moderating and the panelists, Galyn Susman '86 of Pixar, Claire Johnson '94 of Google and Leah Perlman '04, who just left Facebook, spoke eloquently on everything from how Brown shaped their lives, the issues of being a woman in Silicon Valley, and the always present issues around child-rearing and the corporate life.

June 21 (Washington, DC): Women's Leadership Council member Shelley Fidler '68, P'09 hosted 45 Brown women for a reception featuring three Brown alumnae sharing their professional experiences within the field of law. Presenters included Nancy L. Buc '65, Trustee Emerita and Partner, Buc & Beardsley, LLP; Beverly Burke '73, P'07, Vice President and General Counsel, Washington Gas; and Laurie Robinson '68, Assistant Attorney General, U.S. Office of Justice Programs.

January 12 (New York City): Women's Leadership Council Co-Chair Nancy Neff '76, P'06, P'14 hosted the Women's Launch Pad Winter gathering and networking reception at the Hudson Hotel in New York City. Council member and Women's Launch Pad mentor Chandra Metzler '95 served as the keynote speaker to an audience of more than 50 current and former Women's Launch Pad participants. The event provided a great opportunity to make new connections, share mentoring experiences, and see old friends.

November 11 (Boston, MA): Amy Abrams '75 hosted 45 women from the Boston area to hear a panel discussion on entrepreneurship. Alumnae panelists included Chef and Owner of Rialto, Jody Adams '80; Founding CEO, Z Corporation, Marina Hatsopoulos '87; and Founder and Managing Partner, Bracebridge Capital, L.L.C., Nancy G. Zimmerman '85.

October 20-21 (Providence, RI): Women's Launch Pad Kick-Off and Women's Leadership Council Annual Meeting in Providence, RI

September 27 (Washington, DC): Women's Launch Pad mentor Hannah Seligson '04 generously hosted 30 Brown women at her home for a "Brown Women in Media" event. Alumnae panelists included Women's Leadership Council member and Editor of the Chronicle of Philanthropy Stacy Palmer '82; host and published author and journalist Hannah Seligson '04; and bestselling author and journalist Judith Warner '87.

May 3 (Providence, RI): The Women's Leadership Council officially welcomed 15 new members with an orientation held on campus. Executive Vice President of Finance and Administration Beppie Huidekoper spoke at the Council's luncheon about Brown's fiscal health and what measures the University is taking to ensure long-term financial stability.

2009 Events

December 8 (Providence, RI): For the second year in a row, Women's Leadership Council member Marsy Mittlemann P'00, P'04 graciously opened her home to current Women's Launch Pad mentees. Dessert, mingling and a break from studying was enjoyed by 20 young women and fellow Women's Launch Pad mentors.

December 3 (New York City): Women's Leadership Council members Marcia Dunn, MD '82 and Andrea Terzi Baum '83, P'15 hosted a breakfast gathering in Marcia's home featuring Dean of the College Katherine Bergeron. With more than 20 women in attendance, Dean Bergeron shared news from the University, including recent enhancements to the University's Undergraduate Advising program.

October 15 (Providence, RI): Women's Leadership Council Annual Meeting held on campus. Featured speakers included Susan Thurmond and Mary Lou Jackson from the Council for Women of Boston College and Brown University President Ruth J. Simmons. Council members enjoyed cocktails and dinner with guest speaker Dean of Admissions Jim Miller.

October 8 (Washington, DC): Women's Leadership Council members Genine Fidler '77, P'04, P'12 and Shelley Fidler '68, P'09 hosted a networking reception featuring Brown alumnae speaking about their professional experiences. Women's Leadership Council member Jennifer Williams Murphy '86 and former Women's Launch Pad mentee Sophie Waskow '07 were the guest speakers to a multi-generational audience of more than 100 women.

October 2 (Pacific Palisades, CA): Women's Leadership Council members Lauren Corrao '83, P'16 and Natalie Fair '86, P'15 hosted an event for Brown alumni and parents featuring current Brown parent Ann Sweeney P'12, President of Disney-ABC Television Group. More than 20 people attended.
