Providence was founded in 1636 by Roger Williams, and is the capital and the most populous city of Rhode Island.
The Brown University campus is located within a mile of the heart of downtown Providence, close to shops, museums, cultural activities and public transportation. A number of excellent restaurants are located in the area around the campus. The Providence Performing Arts Center, historic Benefit Street, the Rhode Island School of Design, shops, galleries and hotels, are all within walking distance.
