The 249th Commencement

The Commencement Procession
Location: Waterman Street, north of Faunce Arch
The Commencement Procession, one of Brown's greatest and oldest traditions, brings together the entire Brown community in a festive and joyous celebration. The procession steps off promptly at 9:45 AM from Waterman Street, north of Faunce Arch. The procession is led by the chief marshal, a member of the 50th reunion class. All graduating students march through the Van Wickle Gates, which swing open twice a year: inward to admit incoming students during Opening Convocation and outward to discharge the new graduates during Commencement.

Medical School Commencement Ceremony and Awarding of Degrees
First Unitarian Church of Providence, Benefit and Benevolent Streets​
Doors will open at 9:15 AM for general seating. Dean of Medicine and Biological Studies Dr. Jack A. Elias will preside. Immediately following the Medical School ceremony, a post-graduation reception for graduates and their families will be held at the Hope Club, across the street from the First Unitarian Church.  Please visit the Medical School Commencement page for more information.

Graduate School Doctoral Ceremony
Ruth J. Simmons Quadrangle
This Graduate School ceremony for PhD students, their families, and friends features the awarding of doctoral degrees and the Horace Mann Medal. Dean of the Graduate School Peter M. Weber presides. Please visit the Graduate School Commencement page for more information.

Graduate School Master’s Ceremony
Pembroke Field
This Graduate School ceremony for Master’s and Executive Master’s students, their families, and friends features the awarding of degrees and honors acknowledging outstanding achievements. College Ceremony
Grounds of the First Baptist Church in America, Steeple and North Main Streets​
This ceremony takes place on the grounds of the First Baptist Church in America, President Christina Paxson will preside. The ceremony will be videocast to the College Green, Salomon Center for Teaching and Sayles Hall.

University Ceremony
The College Green​
Senior orations are delivered and honorary and symbolic degrees are awarded on the College Green. President Christina Paxson will preside. The ceremony concludes at approximately 2:00 PM. 

2:30 – 4:30 PM (estimated)
Diploma Ceremonies
Location: Various
Following the conclusion of the University Ceremony, graduating seniors and their families attend individual department diploma ceremonies and receptions to receive diplomas individually. Graduating seniors' families are strongly encouraged to meet at the location of their diploma ceremony rather than trying to locate each other on the College Green. Refreshments will be served at the diploma ceremonies. Diploma Ceremony locations are listed on the last page of the Commencement Program.
