Special Instructions For Medical School Degree Recipients

Academic Regalia: The Brown Bookstore recently updated their on-line order form so students can rent academic regalia from their web site. Orders may be placed online, as of March 2017, at the Brown University Bookstore website, or in person at the Bookstore. All graduating medical students who are participating in the procession and graduation ceremony are required to rent the Medical School cap (tam), gown and hood.

Attending Graduation: If you will NOT be participating in the Medical School procession and graduation ceremony, please click here. Your diploma will be mailed to the address provided on your graduation application.

Class Photograph: Your class photograph will be taken on Sunday morning, May 28, at 8:30 AM, at the Marcus Aurelius Statue (Behind Sayles Green on Lincoln Field).

Class Speaker: All graduating medical students are eligible to run for class speaker. Class speaker to be selected by the graduating class. 

Commencement Ceremony: The Medical School Commencement Ceremony will take place in the First Unitarian Church (One Benevolent Street, Providence, RI), at 10:15 AM on Sunday, May 28, 2017. Doors will open at 9:15 AM for seating, and tickets are not required. Individuals requiring handicapped access or seating should arrive between 8:30 AM and 9:00 AM. The ceremony, which includes the awarding of medical degrees, will end at approximately 11:45 AM. A reception with light refreshments at the Hope Club follows (Six Benevolent Street) until 1:30 PM.

Diploma Pronunciation: In order to assist us with the proper pronunciation of your name at the graduation ceremony on May 28, please email your name, written phonetically and with emphasized syllables in caps, to  Julie Haines by April 14.  Example: April Augustino [ey-pruhl aw-guh-steen-OH]

Graduation Questionnaire: Please remember to complete the Medical School Graduation Questionnaire (GQ) which is provided by the Association of American Medical Colleges and its member medical schools. Your input will provide valuable information to our medical school concerning medical education issues at both our school as well as nationally. The website for the GQ is www.aamc.org/gq, will be activated as of February 14, and should be completed prior to June  5, 2017.

Hooding Photograph: A photographer has been hired to take pictures of the graduates as they are hooded in the First Unitarian Church. Photos are available HERE for purchase. 

Invitations for Graduation: The invitations serve only as announcements to friends and relatives, inviting them to attend the commencement ceremony in the First Unitarian Church. They are provided by the Student Affairs Office, at no charge, and can be picked up by graduating seniors anytime mid-April from Janice Viticonte's office, room 212.

Procession: The Medical School Procession will form at 9:30 AM on Waterman Street, facing west, running from Faunce House back toward Thayer Street (Arnold Lab side of the street), and will step off at approximately 9:45 AM.  For details on the exact route of the entire procession, consisting of undergraduates, faculty, alumni, the Graduate School and the Medical School, visit the Procession page.

Seating: Seating in the First Unitarian Church is on a first-come, first-served basis--however, there is a section reserved for handicapped seating. Individuals requiring handicapped access or seating should arrive at the church between 8:30 AM and 9:00 AM.  There are also reserved sections in the center and side aisles for the seniors, faculty, alumni and administration participating in the Medical School procession.

Senior Week: There will be many activities planned for the week prior to graduation, and further details will be sent to graduating seniors via email.

Storm plan: In the event of severe weather, the Commencement procession will be cancelled, and the University Ceremony will be moved indoors and begin at 12:00 pm. The Medical School Commencement ceremony will not be affected. Medical School degree recipients and their families should report to the First Unitarian Church at 9:30 am. Student Pagers: Student pagers can be turned in to Janice Viticonte in Student Affairs, Room 212, before May 22.  Once your pager has been returned, Janice will issue you a reimbursement in the amount of $75 to your student account. Those students who have lost their pagers will have to pay an additional fee.

Tickets for Graduation: Tickets are not required for the graduation ceremony in the First Unitarian Church, and there is no limit to the amount of guests students can invite. All are welcome!

Unpaid Bills: If you have any unpaid bills with the Controller's Office, please be sure you have taken care of them prior to graduation.
