The Department values the development of teaching skills in addition to original scholarship. Over the course of their time in the program, graduate students serve as teaching assistants and usually have the opportunity to develop and teach undergraduate courses reflecting their own research and scholarship.  One requirement of the PhD is that students serve at least one semester as a Teaching Assistant, but we know that as part of their Brown funding they will have other opportunities to teach and we hope to provide students with the chance to prepare and present a course of their own design in their third or fourth year.  In addition, we urge all students to take part in the programs of the Sheridan Center for Teaching and Learning.
