The goals of the Applied Mathematics Departmental Undergraduate Group (AMDUG) is to bring together Brown students who have a common interest in applied mathematics to share resources and talent, develop relationships with faculty and each other, and organize lectures and inspiring events.

The Brown Chapter of the Association of Women in Mathematics is an organization which works to encourage women at Brown to develop their mathematical talent and pursue a career in the mathematical sciences.

The Rose Whelan Society is a group aimed at creating community among women graduate students, postdocs and faculty in Math and Applied Math at Brown. The Society organizes social activities (i.e. group lunches, wine and cheese events at ICERM), as well as career-oriented events (i.e. postdoc and job panels) and outreach activities for undergraduate students (i.e. finals prep study sessions). The group is named after the first person to obtain a Ph.D. in Mathematics at Brown.

The purpose of the Brown SIAM Student Chapter, established in October 2015, is to build community and active connections across disciplines and among graduate and undergraduate students who use applied math. Intended events include academic tutorials, movie and game nights, company visits, and job panels. The Chapter also organizes the Brown Mathematical Contest for Modeling (BMCM) for undergraduate students. Website in preparation.

The main responsibilities of the FGLs are to orchestrate faculty-grad interactions and communicate any concerns/suggestions. The FGLs are also responsible for organizing a once-a-semester meeting attended by representatives from all dept. grad student groups and any grad students interested in dept. funding (i.e. seminar organizers, retreat planners, welcome bbq organizers). At the meeting, the groups present the events they hope to hold (to encourage collaboration) and a single proposed budget for these events/activities/seminars for grad students is presented to the dept. by the FGLs. The FGLs are responsible for organizing the election of new FGLs each September.
The Division of Applied Math is allowed two representatives to the Graduate Student Council (GSC). These representatives are responsible for attending monthly GSC meetings and applying for the departmental rebate from the GSC. They are also tasked with forwarding any information from the GSC to Applied Math grad students and providing a monthly bulletin with GSC meeting details. The GSC reps are responsible for finding new reps upon their retirement.

The goal of this weekly seminar series is to expose students to a broader view of applied mathematics and to bolster the department’s sense of community. Talks can be on any subject, but speakers are encouraged to be reasonably self-contained in order to appeal to a varied audience. Grad seminar organizers are tasked with organizing/publicizing the seminar and scheduling volunteers to bring snacks each week.
Prelim Picnic Planners

The Prelim Picnic is planned by the students who have passed their prelims in the previous year. These students are responsible for publicizing the event, collaborating with the Math Department, purchasing food for the picnic, and preparing the BBQ on site.

The first applied math graduate retreat was held during Fall 2015, in Franklin, NH. The goals of the retreat were to stimulate scientific interactions, introduce first-years to the mathematical energy of the department, and refresh our minds in a beautiful natural environment. The organizers were responsible for booking the retreat center, facilitating transportation by carpool, publicizing the event, coordinating meals, and scheduling the workshops at the retreat.

This representative attends a meeting each semester where liaisons from different departments and staff at the Sheridan Center for Teaching and Learning discuss departmental teaching needs for graduate students. They send emails periodically to the graduate listserv with information about the Sheridan certificate programs, as well as about new workshops or teaching orientations.
