Philip J. Davis, Professor Emeritus

It is with deepest sorrow that we announce the passing of Professor Emeritus Philip J. Davis on Tuesday, March 13, 2018, at the age of 95. Early in his career, Professor Davis made seminal contributions to numerical analysis and wrote influential texts and monographs on circulant matrices, numerical integration, and interpolation theory. Later, his scientific interests turned to the history and philosophy of mathematics. He wrote countless books, articles, and book reviews imbued with his personal perspective. In particular, his profound book on The Mathematical Experience, coauthored by Reuben Hersch, found wide circulation and was translated into a number of foreign languages. Many of his later writings had a lighter tone and brought out the flair and sense of humor of the author. He kept working tirelessly well into his nineties. Phil and his late wife Hadassah had four children and three grandchildren.
