Experimental Iron Smelt

The experimental smelt will include building of a Viking-style furnace and then an iron smelting. This will happen over the course of two days, 8:30 am-5:00pm on Friday, April 22, and Saturday, April 23. The smelt will be headed by Darrell Markewitz of the Warhem Forge, Ontario. John Schofield (University of York): Adventures in the Archaeology of Contemporary Homelessness

Schofield's talk, "Embrace the Margins: Adventures in the Archaeology of Contemporary Homelessness", will describe current research in Bristol (UK) which attempts both to study the archaeology of contemporary homelessness, and do so with a team of predominantly homeless (they prefer ‘home-free’) people. The presentation will provide context to this study and identity why studies of this kind are relevant within broader and increasingly de-centralized heritage agenda. John Schofield has recently been appointed Director of Studies in Cultural Heritage Management at the University of York. Recent books include a collection of previously published works on conflict archaeology (Aftermath: Readings in the Archaeology of Recent Conflict), the co-edited Heritage Reader, and the co-authored After Modernity: Archaeological Approaches to the Contemporary Past. Once captured the data is available in an analysis system that integrates plans, photos, 3d models, and tabular data. Dr. Timothy S. Hare, Assistant Professor of Anthropology in the Institute for Regional Analysis and Public Policy at Morehead State University, will be presenting a talk titled, "Faith, Treachery, and the Great River: Techniques and Tools for Exploring Spatial Processes, Patterns, and Relationships." Hare has directed several archaeological projects in Mexico aimed at reconstructing the transformation of political and economic systems in ancient Aztec and Maya societies. He is also developing software tools to facilitate the quantitative analysis and comparison of multivariate spatial distributions. Lisa Fentress: "Treading the Grapes at Villa Magna"

Lisa Fentress is Director of the Villa Magna Project, which aims at the investigation by excavation and survey of a large imperial Roman villa. Two years of research, conducted using remote sensing survey, open area excavation, field survey, and topographic survey, have revealed the majority of the plan of the Roman buildings, a spectacular wine-making/dining room complex, what appears to be a service or staff quarter of the villa, and a complex, long-lived church and cemetery around the monastery of S. Pietro in Villamagna. Co-sponsored with the RISD Museum.

Geofizzz... at Brown University - Class Presentations

The ARCH 1880 Geofizzz class will be presenting a 40 minute talk on their geophysical survey of the Historic Nelson Aldrich House. As part of the class, students learned the principles and practical application of magnetometry, electrical resistance, and ground penetrating radar survey methods. They used all three survey methods at the Aldrich House and have discovered some interesting anomalies that help reveal the history of the property as well as map modern utilities. Following the talk, students will be happy to answer any questions about this exciting method for non-invasive mapping!

Brian Rose, professor of classical studies at the University of Pennsylvania, shares his work preserving ancient sites from looting, excessive development, and destruction during times of war. He also discusses his introduction of a cultural heritage training program for US troops deploying to the Middle East.
