Joukowsky Award for Student Research
Sponsored by Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World
The Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World is pleased to announce three prizes to honor undergraduate students who have shown great accomplishment in the study of archaeology through their writing and research in the current academic year. All current undergraduate students at Brown University are eligible, regardless of concentration or expected date of graduation.
Students can submit up to one paper or written project per category. Also, students may submit each piece of writing to more than one category, provided that it meets the guidelines for each of the categories in which is it being considered (for example, an entry may be submitted to the ARCH 0001-0999 category AND the All Courses category). The work submitted must have been written for a Brown University class this Fall or Spring semester.

Papers or Projects from ARCH 0001-ARCH 0999 Courses:
For the most outstanding piece of writing in an Archaeology and the Ancient World (ARCH) class at the introductory level (courses under ARCH 0999, including officially cross-listed courses with an ARCH course number) taken in Fall 2022 or Spring 2023.
Award: $200.00

Papers or Projects from ARCH 1000-ARCH 2999 Courses:
For the most outstanding piece of writing in an Archaeology and the Ancient World (ARCH) class at the advanced or graduate level (courses ARCH 1000-2999, including officially cross-listed courses with an ARCH course number) taken in Fall 2022 or Spring 2023. This includes papers by undergraduates submitted to graduate seminars.
Award: $200.00

All Courses: Archaeology Papers or Projects from Any Brown University Course:
For the most outstanding piece of writing dealing with any aspect of archaeology, from any time period or geographical region. This competition is not restricted to papers submitted to an Archaeology and the Ancient World (ARCH) course but is open to any piece of unpublished writing produced for a course taken at Brown University in in Fall 2022 or Spring 2023, exclusive of honors theses.
Award: $250.00
Winning submissions will receive cash awards and will be published on the Joukowsky Institute’s website, go.brown.edu/archaeology. Winners will be contacted via email.
Additional Guidelines:
- All undergraduate students at Brown University are eligible to apply
- Please save your submission as YourLastName2023 (e.g. Smith2023.docx)
- All entries should be written documents saved as Microsoft Word or Adobe pdf files
- Documents may include images, tables, and figures, as appropriate
- Prizes are processed through Workday, so students must register as suppliers by visiting https://secure.brown.edu/purchasing/supplier
