Ductal Carcinoma in Situ (DCIS)

In a background of infiltrating ductal carcinoma with desmoplasia is a duct with DCIS; noncomedo-carcinoma with cribriform pattern is seen here. Cribriform patterns are sometimes compared to Roman bridges or cookie cutters. Other patterns include solid, papillary, and micropapillary.

One of the other patterns of DCIS, with comedo necrosis, shows central necrosis in a solid sheet of cells exhibiting pleomorphism and high grade nuclear change. Calcification is common leading to discovery on mammography.
