Amyloid goiter
This is a greatly enlarged thyroid gland from a case of amyloidosis. The external and cut surfaces can be seen. The photo on the right reveals the birefringent apple green staining of amyloid viewed under polarized light.
Amyloid goiter can be present in primary or secondary amyloidosis. It can precede other clinical manifestations of the disease.
