The Dean’s Postdoctoral Diversity Fellowship is a two-year research fellowship that was established by the Division of Biology and Medicine at Brown University to help grow, support, and retain a diverse scientific workforce. 

BENEFITS

The two-year fellowship will provide support for two promising graduates to pursue postdoctoral training with a faculty mentor in the Division of Biology and Medicine at Brown.  

Details:

  • Fellows will receive a salary based on the NIH FY23 Stipend Scale, plus an additional $5,000. ($61,484 year 1, $61,880 year 2). 
  • Fellows are eligible for Brown’s competitive benefits package.
  • Fellows will also receive a $1,000 award toward professional conference registration and/or travel (through the Division’s Office of Graduate and Postdoc Studies).
  • In year 1, Fellows will meet regularly with the Director of University Postdoctoral Affairs for guidance on achieving Individual Development Plan goals, and assistance connecting with Brown community members and/or additional professional mentors
  • Fellows will be full-time employees of the university.
  • Note this is a two year commitment, where year 1 is supported fully by the Division, and year 2 is supported by the research mentor. 

ELIGIBILITY

  • Have completed an MD, MD/PhD, PhD, ScD, or equivalent in the basic, biomedical, or behavioral sciences.   
  • Be a United States citizen or permanent resident (“green card”).
  • Be a scientist who has demonstrated support for inclusion of underrepresented groups in science.
  • Have less than three years of prior postdoctoral research experience at the time of application.
  • Preference given to applicants who are not already receiving education or training at Brown.

PARTICIPATING DEPARTMENTS

Fellows will conduct research with faculty from the Division’s five departments that comprise the Program in Biology, including the tenure track faculty in the Center for Biomedical Informatics.

Candidates are encouraged to reach out to faculty members from the above departments with whom they are interested in working to discuss their interests. Additionally, a list of active postdoc searches can be found here.  Brown faculty must nominate candidates for this fellowship.

APPLICATION PROCESS

Candidates must be nominated by a participating faculty member, who will provide a nomination letter and the following requested candidate materials to the Associate Dean to initiate the application:

  • Candidate CV
  • Three letters of reference
  • Candidate’s description of how the fellowship will benefit his/her research and career goals, and how these goals may benefit diversity and inclusion in science (1 page max).
