Charlotte Merzbacher '19, Zachary Neronha '19, Evelyn Kendall Williams '15, PhD candidate Amanda Khoo, Marielena Gamboa Castro ’15, and assistant professor Ian Wong.

At the Annual Meeting of the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) last week in Atlanta, Georgia, Brown undergraduates, graduate students, and professors presented talks
and posters. Professor Kareen Coulombe presented on last year’s restructuring of Biomaterials, an upper level bioengineering course that is now presented with a case study
approach. Following their win at the BMES Coulter College this August, Collette Bare ‘19, Emily Borkowski ‘19, Adriana Trejo-Sheu ‘19, and Kelly Williams ‘19 presented on their design of a translation system to help doctors communicate with patients who do not speak English.

One of the highlights of the conference was the undergraduate poster sessions. Hannah Safford ’19, Sumaiya Sayeed ’18, and Soobin Wang ’19 all presented posters based on their work in Professor Anita Shukla’s lab on microbe-responsive antimicrobial films. Zachary Neronha ’19 and Charlotte Merzbacher ’19 presented their work from Professor Ian Wong’s lab on cancer cell aggregation and microtissue models of lung fibrosis. Finally, Daniel Yang ‘19 presented his recent work with Professor Gregory Jay on quadruped gait
disturbances. CBME graduate students and professors also gave poster presentations and talks on a wide range of subjects in BME.

The students who attended BMES reported a positive, collaborative atmosphere and opportunities to attend talks on both scientific and career-oriented topics. Of her experience at BMES, Adriana Trejo-Sheu ’19 said, “[BMES was] such a great opportunity to meet other engineering students from different universities that conduct similar research but with different resources and focus points.”
