Coulombe and Srivastava receive Brown Biomedical Innovations to Impact Awards

A new spinal stimulation technology to treat chronic neuropathic pain. Better testing of oncology drugs to protect the heart. Each of those emergent technologies serves as the centerpiece of a Brown University research project that will receive up to $150,000 through the Brown Biomedical Innovations to Impact accelerator fund.

Riley Flores ’22.5 wins best research presentation award at SHPE national convention

Riley Flores ’22.5 received the best research presentation award at the 2022 National Convention of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, held in Charlotte, N.C. Her presentation, titled “A Device for Multiplexed Processing of Glioblastoma Spheroids,” is part of a research project in the University’s Tripathi Laboratory for Microfluidic Diagnostics and Biomedical Engineering, supervised by engineering PhD candidate Cel Welch GS.

Ph.D. student Kiara Lee works at the intersection of engineering, global public health

Kiara Lee, a doctoral student in biomedical engineering, was recently published in ACS Analytical Chemistry for her research on a new testing method of dried blood spots (DBSs). Lee’s research provides a new, simpler way to test DBSs, which are commonly used to analyze blood for a variety of purposes, including pharmacological testing, genetic analyses, monitoring of viral infections and more. DBSs are an alternative method to collect blood for disease testing because their collection is less invasive than other techniques.

Postdoctoral Researcher Calvert named DARPA 2022 Riser

Jonathan Calvert, a postdoctoral researcher working with Associate Professor David Borton, has been named a DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) 2022 Riser. DARPA Risers are up-and-coming standouts in their fields, whose research is related to national security and demonstrates the potential to lead to technological surprise — the heart of DARPA’s mission.

Welch named to Forbes 30 under 30 list

Forbes Magazine unveiled its 30 under 30 Class of 2023 yesterday, recognizing young leaders that are turning to entrepreneurship to solve the world’s biggest problems. Brown biomedical engineering Ph.D. candidate Cel Welch was among the honorees in the science category, landing on the list for their research focusing on the creation of new technologies for cellular diagnostics, such as novel electrical and electronic devices, microfluidics, and machine learning techniques.
