National Institute of Mental Health – Statistics
Did you know that over 18% of all U.S. adults and almost 50% of adolescents experienced mental illness in the past year? These are just two of the statistics recently released by the National Institute on Mental Health on the prevalence and treatment of different mental illnesses in the U.S. population. "There is power in numbers," said Joshua A. Gordon, M.D., Ph.D., director of NIMH. "Mental illnesses affect tens of millions of people in the United States and across the globe each year. Each of these individuals has a singular, compelling story that conveys an understanding of the depth of suffering. Statistics build on this foundation by helping us better understand the broader scope and impact of mental illnesses on society." The new section of the NIMH website includes detailed statistics and interactive graphs for depression, autism, post-traumatic stress disorders and many other mental illnesses.
