2018 Undergraduate & Graduate Student Award Winners

On May 8, 2018, the department held its annual Award Ceremony. The ceremony highlights excellence in research, teaching, mentorship, coursework, and service to the department among our students, faculty, and staff. 

The department presents awards to undergraduate and graduate students for several accomplishments. Congratulations to all students who received awards!

FRESHMAN CHEMISTRY ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

This award is presented to the student who achieves the highest grade in each section of CHEM0330 during the academic year. 
2018 Winners: Chloe Finch, Lawrence Huang, Lucas Paulo de Lima Camillo, & Nicholas Scott
  

ORGANIC CHEMISTRY PRIZE

This award recognizes the student who achieves the highest grade in each section of CHEM0360 during the academic year.  
2018 Winner: Aayush Kothari & Hanley Ma 
  

NEW CONCENTRATOR PRIZE

This award recognizes the newly declared concentrator, in each of the three concentrations, with outstanding academic record.

JUNIOR PRIZE

This award recognizes the junior with the best overall record in each of the three concentrations.

PAUL CROSS PRIZE

This award is presented to the senior who has demonstrated special promise in physical chemistry.

CLAPP PRIZE FOR OUTSTANDING UNDERGRADUATE THESIS

This award recognizes the senior graduating with honors with an outstanding undergraduate thesis.

2018 Winners: 

  • Biochemistry – Lilit Grigoryan (thesis: "Identification of Different Stages of Effector CD8+ T cell Differentiation with Prof. Laurent Brossay)
  • Chemistry – Joseph Capani (thesis: "Two-Dimensional Polymerization of Self-Assembled Monolayers" with Prof. Matthew Zimmt

The department also nominates undergraduates for American Chemical Society (ACS) awards:

  • ACS Division of Inorganic Chemistry Undergraduate Award in Inorganic Chemistry - Melissa Nakamoto
  • ACS Division of Organic Chemistry Undergraduate Award in Organic Chemistry - Joseph Capani

Graduate Awards

THE WILLIAM T. KING PRIZE  

The King Prize recognizes superior performance as a teaching assistant during the academic year. The prize is awarded annually to graduate students whose efforts as a teacher and facilitator of chemical learning go beyond normal expectations.

SIGMA XI AWARD

The Sigma Xi Award for Excellence in Graduate Research recognizes outstanding research accomplishments during a graduate student's career. Students in their last year of graduate study are eligible.

THE ELAINE CHASE AWARD FOR LEADERSHIP AND SERVICE

The Chase Award  recognizes the students whose extraordinary leadership and service contributions during their years at Brown improved the department or the academic and educational experiences of all graduate students.  
2018 Recipient: Alexandra Kat Stephan (Rose-Petruck Group)


Additionally, the department awards an annual Wernig Fellowship to a rising fifth-year graduate student who has shown excellence in research as evidenced by publications, conference participation or other research accomplishments. The 2018 awardee is Alexandra Kat Stephan.
