On Sunday, May 27, 2018, graduating students, invited guests, and faculty gathered at MacMillan Hall for the Chemistry Department Diploma Ceremony, led by Department Chair Paul G. Williard.
Fourteen graduate students received their Ph.D. degrees earlier in the day at the Graduate School ceremony. The newly conferred Doctors of Philosophy were announced at the ceremony to celebrate their accomplishments and share the next phase of their careers. Dr. Dylan Vale Cofer-Shabica was awarded the Department of Chemistry’s William R. Potter Prize for Doctoral Thesis of Outstanding Merit, awarded annually to the graduate with “most exceptional chemistry PhD dissertation as judged by a faculty committee.” Vale completed a thesis titled "Potential landscape perspectives on roaming: Insights on formaldehyde from geodesics paths" with Professor Richard M. Stratt.
In addition, fourteen students received a Master of Arts in Chemistry and will continue their graduate students in the Chemistry Department.
Professor Williard and University Trustee Galen V. Henderson MD'93 presented diplomas to candidates for Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry, Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry, and Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. Reflecting Brown's Open Curriculum, some graduates completed double concentrations in fields including classics, economics, education, and Middle East studies. In total, 30 undergraduates received diplomas among friends, family, and department faculty.
The Department of Chemistry wishes the best of luck to all of its 2018 graduating class. Congratulations!
