Research Statement

Prof. Hess works on developing pedagogy that incorporates guided inquiry experiments, research methods, and green principles into undergraduate laboratories.

Areas of Interest

  • Guided inquiry organic and inorganic experiments
  • Green chemistry principles
  • Renewable energy
  • Liberal learning
  • Interdisciplinary studies

As a lecturer in the department, Dr. Hess is primarily responsible for teaching and managing the undergraduate organic laboratories. Dr. Hess has incorporated many aspects of a research laboratory in the undergraduate laboratories. Students are currently using Library resources such as Reaxys to obtain primary literature sources that relate to their experiments. Analysis of experimental data is obtained with modern instruments. All experiments are inquiry based to incorporate the true nature of scientific research.
