Brown Classics Department Hosts 2018 CANE Summer Institute Lecture Series

The Classical Association of New England (CANE) and Brown's Department of Classics invite you to join us for the 2018 CANE Summer Institute!  The CANE Summer Institute is a weeklong event that provide a unique and rich opportunity for teachers and students of the Classics -- as well as other disciplines -- from all levels.  Whether you are a high school or college teacher of Latin and/or Greek, History, English, the Arts, or other related disciplines, an undergraduate or graduate student, or a devoted lifelong learner, you will enjoy this thoughtful and enriching experience. The mini-courses and lectures that form the core of the Summer Institute are typically taught by professors of colleges and universities in the New England area.  Faculty from Harvard, Holy Cross, and Trinity, in addition to Brown, are among those who will participate in this summer's Institute. This year's director is Professor Timothy Joseph of Holy Cross.

This year’s lecture series is entitled “Empires Ancient & Modern: Reactions to Imperial Power from Athens to the Americas.”  While exploring the practices and problems of ancient empires, the institute’s events and discussions will also consider modern and contemporary engagements – the use, misuse, and abuse – of Classical models of empire.  Faculty from Harvard, Holy Cross, and Trinity, in addition to Brown, are among those who will participate in this summer's Institute.

The event takes place from Monday, July 9th through Saturday, July 14th.  The courses, workshops, and seminars require pre-registration; however, all of the lectures are free and open to the public.  All lectures will be in Smith-Buonanno Hall, Room 106.  Additional information about the times and topics of the daily lectures can be found on the CANE website.

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to the Department of Classics at x3-1267, or [email protected].  We hope to see you there!
