Announcing the 2021 Lyon-Foster Undergraduate Prize Exams

The Classics Department is pleased to announce that we are planning to run this year’s Lyon-Foster Language Prize Exams via Zoom.  Since many of us are still working remotely, we're once again asking students to register for the prize exam(s) they are interested in.  
 
Please complete our online registration form no later than Monday, April 5th at 4 pm, EDT.  After we've gathered all registrations, you will be emailed with the Zoom link and additional instructions.  Below are the descriptions and eligibility criteria for each exam.  If you have any questions, please email us at [email protected].

Lafayette Sabine Foster Prize in Ancient Greek: open to all Brown undergraduates

Tuesday, April 13th, 3:00 pm EDT

This prize is awarded to any Brown undergraduate who provides the best translation of the first, third, sixth, and twenty-fourth books of Homer’s Iliad, or in the Oration on the Crown by Demosthenes from the ancient Greek language.

Participants have one hour to translate as much of the passage(s) as possible. This is a sight examination so you may not use aids of any kind.

 

Lucius Lyon Prize in Latin: open to seniors only (class of 2021) 

Wednesday, April 14th, 3:00 pm EDT

The prize is awarded to Brown seniors on the basis of a special examination relating to any or all of the following subjects: the Latin language, Latin literature, Roman history.

This examination is open only to members of the class of 2021. The examination lasts for one hour. The first part of the exam is translation.  The translation portion of this examination is a sight examination. The second part of the exam is an essay questions.  You may not use any books or aids of any kind.
