EpiDoc Workshop

We are pleased to announce a 1.5 day Introduction to Epidoc workshop at Brown University on Oct. 5-6, to be held In conjunction with the Visible Words Conference taking place Oct 6-7.

This workshop will provide an introduction to the Epidoc schema for editing epigraphic and papyrological texts. EpiDoc ( is a community of practice as well as a specialized customization of the XML schema developed by the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) for the encoding of inscriptions, papyri and other ancient texts. It has been used to publish digital epigraphic projects including Inscriptions of Aphrodisias (, US Epigraphy (, Duke Databank of Documentary Papyri (, Digital Corpus of Literary Papyri (, and many more. The workshop will introduce participants to the basics of XML markup and give hands-on experience of tagging textual features and object descriptions, identifying and linking to external person and place authorities, and project workflow and management.
