MMUF is open to sophomores who identify as African American, Latina/o, and American Indian, as well as other students with a demonstrated commitment to the goals of the program and to eradicating racial disparities in higher education. Successful applicants show exceptional academic promise and an interest in pursing an academic career in a Mellon-designated field of study.
The following criteria are also weighed in selecting Fellows:
- Equivalent of a minimum of 3.0 grade point average in the student's field of interest;
- Demonstrated commitment to increasing opportunities for underrepresented minorities, and promoting cross-racial and -ethnic understanding;
- Commitment to full and enthusiastic participation in all aspects of the MMUF program, including attendance at conferences and meetings;
- Status as a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
