Course Lotteries

June 23rd, 2017

Greetings, incoming students!

First-Year Course Lottery Placements from the first round are now viewable in ASK under "My Placements." If you were not placed in the first round, you have priority placement in the second round. If you were placed in a CAP course in the first round, you can still select a non-CAP first-year seminar (FYS) in the second round. The second round opens today and will close on July 5 at 5 pm. There is also a FYS that is not available through the lottery, but rather through an application process:

Phage Hunters course Phage Hunters(BIOL 190R/S) is a two-semester program developed by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) as a "hands-on" way to approach introductory biology. Students learn the foundations of molecular biology and laboratory techniques by doing actual research; by the end of the second semester, students will have acquired the theory and classic "wet lab" skills of molecular biology, as well as modern in silico methods of DNA analysis.  This course makes students competitive to obtain research positions in laboratories earlier than the typical undergraduate.  Phage Hunters is a year-long course that is open to twenty incoming first-years, and spots are assigned on an application basis. There are no prerequisites, other than the ability to commit to both semesters.  Interested students should contact Sarah_Taylor@brown.edu to obtain a copy of the course application.

Visual Arts 0100 Lottery The Visual Arts 0100 lottery opens on July 15 and closes on August 5.  Visual Arts 0100 (Studio Foundation) is a popular introductory course suitable for potential VISA concentrators and non-concentrators alike. You can enter this lottery in self-service Banner.
