Weekly Emails Detail

(back to list)

August is just around the corner!

July 28th, 2017

Greetings first-years,

There are lots of deadlines for August, so make sure that you are keeping track with the emails we send and the summer deadlines checklist. If you have any questions, feel free to email advising@brown.edu or call 401-863-9800.

AUGUST 15 DEADLINES - submit via ASK

AP Credit Notation Certain AP credits will block you from registering for introductory level courses in mathematics, biology, psychology, French, German, or Italian. If you are interested in taking an introductory course in any of these areas, be sure to click "Decline AP Credit Notation" next to the appropriate score.

Letter to Your Advisor Before arriving on campus, you'll need to submit a letter of introduction to your advisor. Since you won’t yet know who your advisor will be, feel free to use a generic greeting. The most important aspect of this letter is giving your advisor the chance to get to know you. Say a bit about who you are, what you're interested in, and what hopes or worries you might have regarding your time at Brown. Be sure to write enough to allow your advisor to get a sense of who you are and what is important to you.

First Readings Response You received a copy of this year's First Readings selection, The Tsar of Love and Techno, earlier this summer. During Orientation, you'll participate in a discussion about this text. In order to prepare, we ask that you write a short responsive essay outlining your reactions to the text. This could include what surprised you or what information you found compelling or relatable.

Other Upcoming Deadlines

  • August 1: Submit Brown ID Photo via self-service Banner
  • August 5: Visual Arts 0100 Lottery close
  • August 15: Mandatory code tutorial; Add course preferences to cart
  • August 22: Required Alcohol Misuse and Sexual Assault Prevention Courses

To view any of the e-mails we sent earlier this summer, go to the Orientation website under "Preparing for Brown."

Sincerely, The Advising Team at Brown
