Housing: shared flats, homestays possible
Accepts Non-Brown Students: No
Language Requirement: none, HISP 0200 or 0110 recommended
Special Feature: Internship opportunities
Upon arrival to Santander, students attend an orientation program sponsored by the University of Cantabria. The orientation allows students to learn more about the University’s international student support as well as information about their local surroundings. Students may enroll in an optional non-credit bearing two-week intensive Spanish language preparation course prior to the orientation. Full year students then begin their regular courses in late September; spring term students begin their regular courses in mid-February.
Students select three engineering courses, one required Spanish language course, and one Spanish culture course; they will receive four Brown credits upon successful completion of the five courses. (Each engineering course will transfer as one Brown course unit, and together, the language and culture courses will equal one Brown course unit.)
A selection of engineering courses on offer at the University of Cantabria includes:
- Full Year Program: late August through mid-June
- Spring term: mid-January through mid-June
- Optional Internship: June through mid-August
The University of Cantabria provides Brown students appropriate housing accommodation in shared furnished private flats duly vetted to meet appropriate construction standards, safety and security. Flats are furnished with beds, table, chairs and a full kitchen, but bed linens and towels must be provided by the student. Students also have the option of living with carefully selected Spanish families.
Internship or Summer Research Opportunities
Brown engineering students who have successfully completed the full year or the spring semester may be eligible for 6-8 week summer engineering internship placements or supervised research projects. Towards the end of the spring term, the School of Engineering will work with interested students to determine an internship placement with a Spanish firm or a public works project or a summer research placement with faculty from the School of Engineering. For internships, students may be placed with public works projects sponsored by the City of Santander and the Regional Government of Cantabria, work alongside professors in research, or help with "on site" duties in supervised civil engineering projects, building anything from bridges and freeways to tunnels. Companies providing internship placements have included Ferrovial, ACS, OHL Gamesa or Acciona.
