Brown Summer Programs
OIP Summer Grant
The Office of International Programs has a limited amount of OIP Summer Grant money available for qualified Brown students who participate in Brown summer study abroad programs only. Grants are awarded based on a student's financial need, and those students demonstrating the highest need are awarded first. For students who receive a grant, the total grant amount awarded (per recipient) typically falls between $1000 - $4000 (maximum amount). This year, there are three programs eligible for this grant: Comillas Studio Art; St. Petersburg Language & Culture; and Bologna World Cinema. (please see the summer program web page for funding options for the Brown/CASA summer program in Dublin).
Eligibility requirements for OIP Summer Grants:
- Current continuing undergraduate Brown student receiving University Scholarship
- Financial Aid application (FAFSA) on file with Brown's Office of Financial Aid
- Good academic standing
- Applying to an eligible Brown-sponsored summer study abroad program
Awarding OIP Summer Grants
OIP has established a fund, allocated across Brown summer programs, to help make these programs accessible to students on financial aid. Eligibility for the OIP Summer Grant is based on the student's recent financial aid award. Keep in mind that the amount of funding available is very limited, and not all students will receive a grant (even if they qualify for financial aid at Brown). NB: OIP Summer Grants never cover the entire cost of a Brown summer program, and typically total no more than $1000 - $4000 for those students who receive a grant (the higher amount is awarded to the neediest students).
All applicants who indicate that they receive financial aid at Brown will be considered for the OIP Summer Grant when they apply to the program. Consideration for awards is based on a student's level of financial need, as indicated by Brown's Financial Aid Office.
Additional Scholarship and Loan Eligibility
Students who require extra funding to cover the costs of a Brown/CASA summer program should meet with the Office of Financial Aid to discuss the possibility of a loan once they have been accepted to the program. This determination will be based on your recent financial aid award and whether or not you have reached your borrowing limit.
Brown/CASA summer program students can also search for external scholarships and grants offered through non-Brown organizations (see studyabroad.com, goabroad.com, iiepassport.org, and here). If a student attending a Brown summer program is awarded an external summer scholarship, the student should notify the Office of International Programs.
Students who apply to a program and are offered OIP Summer Grant funds will have approximately 1-2 weeks (from acceptance) to confirm their spot with a $500 non-refundable deposit. Only students who are seriously planning to participate should apply; applying without intent to commit impacts the process and our ability to award grant funds to those who are truly interested.
If a student commits to a Brown summer study abroad program and then withdraws, s/he forfeits the $500 deposit (along with a potential OIP withdrawal penalty fee depending on the withdrawal date) and is not eligible for the OIP Summer Grant.
Non-Brown Summer Programs
Students who are interested in non-Brown summer study abroad programs can search for external scholarships and grants through studyabroad.com, goabroad.com, iiepassport.org, and here. If you currently receive financial aid at Brown, you may be eligible to receive additional loans through the Brown University Office of Financial Aid if you are approved for the credit to transfer to Brown. Brown does not award grants or scholarships for non-Brown summer study abroad programs.
