The Swearer Classroom Program works to improve the literacy skills of elementary school-aged students who attend the D'Abate Elementary School, located in the Olneyville section of Providence, or Mary Fogarty Elementary School on Providence’s south side.
Brown student volunteers provide struggling students in grades K-5 with individualized attention and in-depth focus on reading and writing. Because the volunteers make a weekly commitment for a full semester or academic year, D'Abate students receive and benefit from consistent support.
As classroom assistants, Brown student volunteers work with smaller groups on the daily lesson or specific areas of teacher concern. They assist with instruction to English Language Learners, and may be placed in classrooms where both Spanish and English are spoken.
