Excellence at Brown Additional Information

Why Excellence?

Excellence at Brown provides an intense, fun, meaningful experience that positions students to thrive at Brown. Throughout the week, students build relationships with faculty and with other students, learn how to navigate Brown's campus, and gain exposure to and comfort with writing at the college level. By the time Orientation begins, students are ready to immerse themselves in Brown's rich living and learning environment. According to program assessment data:

  • Excellence participants report increases in their ability to write clearly and effectively.

Nearly all program alums pass their first writing requirement on time or earlier than Brown requires.

 

Program Outcomes:

  • By attending small group seminars facilitated by faculty members across campus, participants will gain exposure to Brown University’s open curriculum and gain experience in classrooms that will require them to read, think critically, participate in and lead discussions, and produce writing for multiple purposes and audiences.

     

  • By attending workshops and one-on-one writing conferences facilitated by near-peer mentors, participants are introduced to Brown’s robust peer teaching and learning communities where they have the opportunity to celebrate how much they already know as well how to better identify and effectively address critical areas for growth and development, including on campus resources to support their success.

  • By selecting one of three papers to revise at the end of the week and attending small group workshops introducing revision strategies, participants gain exposure to concrete methods for improving their writing.

  • By arriving on campus one week prior to general orientation and engaging in Excellence’s living learning community, participants have the opportunity to develop relationships that support their initial transition from high school to college and well beyond as they acclimate to Brown’s campus and community.
