International Pilot

The Carnegie Foundation has offered an elective Community Engagement Classification for campuses in the United States since 2006. Because of a significant volume of requests from higher education institutions from across the globe to participate in the classification, the Foundation is exploring the structure and process for an international classification. In 2015-2016, nine campuses in Ireland went through a yearlong process of administering the Community Engagement Classification for the purpose of self-assessment and to provide feedback on ways in which the documentation framework (application) might need to be adapted to account for the national and cultural context. The Ireland project has informed this international Carnegie Classification pilot.

What is the Carnegie Community Engagement Classification?

The Carnegie Foundation's Classification for Community Engagement is an elective classification, meaning that it is based on voluntary participation by institutions. The elective classification involves data collection and documentation of important aspects of institutional mission, identity and commitments, and requires substantial effort invested by participating institutions. It is an institutional classification; it is not for systems of multiple campuses or for part of an individual campus.

The classification is not an award. It is an evidence-based documentation of institutional practice to be used in a process of self-assessment and quality improvement. The documentation is reviewed to determine whether the institution qualifies for recognition as a community engaged institution.

Application

Campuses that wish to be considered for participation in a pilot of the International Carnegie Community Engagement Classification will need to complete this application and pay the $1,000 application fee (below), which covers the administration of the classification. Application for the pilot does not assure that the campus will be selected for the pilot.

5 campuses will be chosen for the pilot. In choosing the pilot campuses, consideration will be given to a diversity of international contexts, executive leadership commitment, willingness to participate in a yearlong data-gathering process that will include a site visit from a review team and payment of a $10,000 fee from which the application fee will be deducted ($9,000 U.S.). Participating campuses will be responsible for covering the travel and accommodation costs of the review team (2 members).

The application consists of three parts:

  • Part 1
    Provide the contact information for the applicant representative and for the president/chancellor of the campus.
     
  • Part 2
    Upload a letter of commitment from the president/chancellor explaining why they want to participate in the pilot.
     
  • Part 3
    Provide the mission statement for the campus and a brief discussion of how community engagement is both expressed in the university’s mission and operationalized on the campus.
