Biography: Julian is a Development and Operations Associate VISTA with Breakthrough Providence. Before serving with Americorps, Julian studied English and American Literature at New York University. After graduation, I worked in fundraising for NYU until the end of the year. He then spent two years teaching English as a Foreign Language first in Ho-Chi-Minh-City, Vietnam, then in Clermont-Ferrand, France. In his free time, Julian enjoys reading, hiking, and the occasional pick-up badminton game.
Why I Serve: Education is a powerful and versatile tool with which to fight poverty and inequality, but it’s also an unsolved problem. I have witnessed the way that our current systems exclude people, and I want to be a part of correcting that.
Why Brown University AmeriCorps VISTA Fellowship? I was educated in Rhode Island public schools and I have always known that I wanted to give back to my community. After spending two years doing classroom teaching, I knew that I wanted to spend my career in education. I chose to work with AmeriCorps VISTA via Brown to widen my perspective on educational issues, and to see how I could contribute to the fight against poverty with indirect service too.
