Allen Hance serves as Director of Academic Engagement at the Swearer Center, Assistant Dean of the College and Adjunct Lecturer in International and Public Affairs. Prior to coming to Brown, Allen was the executive director of the Chesapeake Bay Trust, a public foundation that supports community-based solutions to environmental problems, and co-chair of the Chesapeake Bay Funders Network. Previously, Allen was a senior policy analyst at the Northeast-Midwest Institute in Washington, D.C. and a NOAA-Sea Grant legislative fellow in the U.S. House of Representatives, working on agriculture, ecosystem management and nutrition and food systems policy.  He was formerly a faculty member in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. He earned a B.A. in philosophy at Dartmouth College, Ph.D. in philosophy at Boston College and M.S. in environmental policy at the University of Michigan
