Applying to the BCF
How many students are accepted into the Bonner Community Fellowship?
For the class of 2027, we will accept 20 students as Bonner Fellows.
I don't have civic or community engagement experience; can I still apply?
Yes! Please apply if you are passionate about civic engagement, social justice, or issues that affect your community. In our admission process, we focus more on passion and potential than on past experience. We recognize that not everyone may have had the opportunity to engage in community service during High School. Also, civic engagement can take many forms, from volunteering to caring for your family. So please, apply even if you don't think you have any 'formal' experience.
What do I need to apply to the BCF?
To apply, you just need to fill out the application form on Brown's UFunds website before the deadline. For the application, you will need to answer some basic questions (like name, pronouns, e-mail, Banner ID), share your resume, and complete six essay questions. Your answers to the essay questions should be no longer than 300 words for each. This year we will provide an option to share your answers through a recording (audio or video).
On your application, you will also be given the opportunity to share one thing you feel can further support your application. This can be a recommendation letter, a work example, an essay, an art piece, or anything you think can help us better understand you and your work.
Can I apply to the BCF if I'm not an incoming First-Year student?
Maybe, but probably not.
The BCF is a 4-year program, so normally only incoming First-Year undergraduate students would be eligible. However, if you know you have 4 years left in your undergrad degree (for example, if you are a Brown|RISD Dual Degree student rising into year 2). please e-mail us, and we can create an exception to allow you to apply.
Can I apply to the BCF if I'm also applying to other programs like Presidential Scholars or Kessler Scholars?
Yes, you can still apply to the BCF if you are applying to other 4-year academic award programs like Presidential Scholars or Kessler. However, you would only be able to accept one offer from any of these programs even if you receive more than one.
